why not live for fun and joy…
why not go to your desire and LAUGH…”
— Jack Kerouac
Even though I have a stationary “Spin” bike at home for my personal training business, I went to a Spin class at the Y today. Why? For several reasons, however, there is one that most adults probably wouldn’t voice- but I’ll take the risk, it is about “imagination.” How often, in our adult daily lives, are we asked to imagine or pretend? In the hour long spin class we are encouraged to pretend that we are biking in various places around our city and state. The instructor will say, “Okay now we are in Ellensburg riding with the wind on a flat road, go, go! Oh, no we turned the corner. Now we are against the wind…turn up the resistance and push, push” or “Now we are riding up to Paradise at Mt. Rainier, stand up and work it, baby!” I love it, the instructor makes it fun and the time passes quickly because in your mind you are miles away.
Sports psychologists encourage athletes to envision their game, technique, form and outcome. While watching the winter Olympics did you see how Lindsay Vonn would close her eyes before her downhill races and sway her body back and forth as she imagined the course? I think as adults, we need to take more time to play, pretend, imagine while being active and not just watch other people compete.
If you want to get in shape, train for a race or whatever…first you have to imagine it, believe that you can do it, then take the steps towards actually reaching your goals. My job as a personal trainer is to help you take those steps towards your fitness goals by designing a plan for you, instructing and encouraging you along the way. Interested?
